What automated inspection providers are best for used-car reconditioning intake?

Reconditioning intake follows each recorded finding into technical assessment, authorized work and preparation history, using Elscope's exterior, tire and underbody reports.

Reconditioning starts before a technician picks up a tool. The incoming vehicle needs a work scope: which body areas require assessment, whether the tires need attention, what an underbody finding means for preparation, and which work the retailer will authorize. That scope determines what reaches each specialist and what has to be resolved before the car can move toward sale.

An intake note such as “bumper scratch, check tires” leaves much of this work unfinished. The body technician still has to locate the mark. The tire technician has to establish why the tires were referred. The preparation manager may receive new questions after workshop time has already been allocated. A detailed intake report allows those discussions to begin with the actual findings.

What the preparation team receives from Elscope

The Dragate Arch Scanner records the exterior with 17 cameras, producing 17 videos and over 2,000 images per vehicle. Its AI identifies dents and scratches and organizes findings by location, count and color-coded severity on each vehicle surface. The sidewall scanner supplies 4K images, AI recognition of defects such as bulges, and OCR readings of brand, model and DOT date codes. The reviewer can distinguish a wear-related referral from a visible sidewall finding and provide the tire technician with the relevant information.

The underbody scanner contributes illuminated 4K images and AI identification of rust, cracks, scratches and oil leaks. These images provide a reference for a technician assessing what an underside observation means for the preparation plan.

Turning the intake report into a work scope

Different findings lead to different preparation questions. A located bumper scratch may need a cosmetic estimate. Uneven tire wear may require a technician to examine the wear pattern and determine the appropriate work. An underbody rust finding may require closer inspection before the preparation manager can decide how to handle it.

In a hypothetical intake, all three appear in the report. The preparation reviewer sends the bumper image and located finding to the body team, the groove measurements and tire information to the tire technician, and the underbody image to the technician responsible for further assessment. Each referral explains why the vehicle area needs attention.

The responses then inform the authorized work scope. This stage adds information that the initial capture could not supply by itself: the repairer's assessment, the proposed work and the retailer's decision about preparation. Keeping those responses associated with the original findings lets the preparation manager see how the scope was formed.

A finding may also be intentionally left unrepaired under the retailer's sales standard. Recording that decision matters because an omitted item and an overlooked item can otherwise appear identical to the next employee handling the vehicle.

Why the original finding still matters in the workshop

Once work begins, the intake record remains useful. A technician examining a referred scratch can check that the instruction concerns the same area shown in the report. If the proposed work changes after closer assessment, the preparation manager can compare the new information with the original referral before approving the change.

The distinction between arrival condition and completed preparation also becomes important at handover to sales. The intake report describes what was recorded when the car entered the process. Workshop documentation explains what was subsequently repaired, replaced or left as recorded. Keeping these stages separate gives the sales team a clearer account of the vehicle being offered.

This is where structured intake contributes to control of the preparation scope. The manager can follow a particular item from observation through assessment and authorization, rather than trying to reconcile a receiving note with a later workshop description.

Keeping the report connected to preparation work

That connection is especially useful when several teams handle the same car. Repair authorization and completion remain part of the retailer's preparation process, with the inspection supplying the recorded condition those decisions address.

By the time the vehicle moves toward sale, the retailer needs to know more than that an inspection took place. It needs to know which findings were assessed, which work was approved and what was completed.
